The women of the Community Kitchen met when they participated in the "Women Are Cooking Up Business" project. The project was designed to teach women in need of financial aid to open a small business by doing what they are used to doing for free – cooking. Looking to make their education into a viable business, a few women came together, pooling their assets in order to make a collective profit. Each woman has a specific product that she produces, but the group shares the burden of managing an industrial kitchen.
In partnering with SAHA, the women gained another element critical to their business's success: access to the mainstream market. In addition, SAHA has helped them to learn more vital lessons about product design and marketing.
