Women's Association of Wadi-Fukin

Wadi-Fukin is another story of a Palestinian community that has been devastated by the occupation. Before the building of the Separation Wall the men of the village provided for their families by working on Israeli farms. Now they cannot leave the village, and so their families struggle to find an alternative source of income. A group of women in the village decided to take matters into their own hands. Organizing under the Women's Association for Urban Development, they have created the Women's Association of Wadi-Fukin. This Association is meant to be a platform for the women to lead change in their community: provide day care for small children during summer vacation, provide support for one another and hopefully, find a means by which they can generate income for their families. One of the ideas they had was to make pickles. Wadi Fukin literally means “The Green Valley”. The soil there is very fertile and every woman is able to grow a small amount of produce in the area near her house. They decided to make pickles out of the vegetables they grow and sell them to family friends and Internationals that come through the village. A connection between the Women's Association and Green Action was established by activists who visited the village and brought back with them a jar of pickled vegetables they received as a gift from one of the women. For the members of Green Action it was not only a jar of pickles but also a jar of potential. The first step, organizing in an association had already been taken by the women. For us, this was a testimony to the group's entrepreneurship. Despite this, they still required assistance in matters concerning creating a food business (pricing, health regulations and more), adapting products to fit the tastes of the common market, packaging and marketing. Saha has assisted and guided the women of Wadi-Fukin in this process and now their products are ready for distribution.
